What is the program?

The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program gives parents tools and strategies to raise their child in an environment that is safe, loving, and predictable. Triple P draws on social learning, cognitive behavioral, and developmental theory, as well as research into risk factors associated with the development of social and behavioral problems in children. Triple P addresses child behavioral and emotional problems by giving parents proven tools and skills to build stronger families. The program aims to: (a) prevent problems in the family, school, and community before they arise; (b) treat behavioral and emotional problems in children and teenagers; (c) create family environments that encourage children to realize their potential; and (d) equip parents with the skills and confidence they need to be self-sufficient and to be able to manage family issues without ongoing support.

Who is the program for?

The Triple P Positive Parenting Program for toddler to tweens is delivered to parents of children up to 12 years. The Triple P Positive Parenting Program for pre-teens and teens is delivered to parents of 10- to 16-year-olds.

What outcomes does the program produce?

  • Increases child emotional coping skills
  • Increases behavioral self-regulation in children
  • Increases self-awareness in children
  • Improve parent child relationships

What is the evidence?

Leung, C., Fan, A., & Sanders, M. R. (2013). The effectiveness of a Group Triple P with Chinese parents who have a child with developmental disabilities: A randomized controlled trial. Research in Developmental Disabilities, 34(3), 976–984. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ridd.2012.11.023

In this randomized control trial, families of pre-school aged children with developmental disabilities were place in two groups. One group receiving the Triple P intervention (42 families) and one control group (39 families). All participants took a pre and posttest composed of questions that measured parent stress, student behavior, and satisfaction with the program. The results showed that families receiving the Triple P intervention, had fewer child behavior problems, less parental stress, and less instances of dysfunctional discipline practices in the post intervention questionnaire. The study also showed that the impacts of the Triple P program continued to last 6 months after the intervention.

Prinz, R. J., Sanders, M. R., Shapiro, C. J., Whitaker, D. J., & Lutzker, J. R. (2009). Population-Based Prevention of Child Maltreatment: The U.S. Triple P System Population Trial. Prevention Science, 10(1), 1–12. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11121-009-0123-3

The impact of the Triple P program on reducing child maltreatment on a systemic level was evaluated in this study. Within one state,18 counties of similar characteristics were randomly selected to be placed in either a group disseminating Triple P (600 service providers trained to deliver intervention to families) or a service-as-is control group. The two groups were evaluated after 2 years of Triple P dissemination. The families targeted within the counties disseminating Triple P, were those with at least one child under 8 years old. The post-intervention results showed that the number of substantiated child maltreatment cases, out of home placements, and child maltreatment injuries (hospital & ER) were significantly lower in the intervention counties than control counties.
