What is the program?

The Next Mark Foundation Teacher Training Program guides educators on how to recognize student mental health issues in the classroom and provides real life, practical strategies to manage student behaviors. The Next Mark Foundation Teacher Training Program was developed by educators and Licensed Clinical Social Workers with experience training educators in the field of special education and an understanding of how mental health issues manifest themselves in the classroom.

Who is the program/practice for?

The Next Mark Foundation Teacher Training Program is designed for all K-12 educators, including classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, counselors, related services members and school administrators.

What outcomes does the program/practice produce?

  • Improve identification of anxiety disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and oppositional defiant disorders (ODD) in the classroom
  • Improve educator’s ability to handle challenging student behavior
  • Improve help-seeking behavior

What is the evidence or research that supports the program/practice?

Ohrt, J.H., Deaton, J.D., Linich, K., Guest, J.D., Wymer, B., & Sandonato, B. (2020). Teacher training in K–12 student mental health: A systematic review. Psychology in the Schools, 57(5), 833– 846. https://doi.org/10.1002/pits.22356

This is a systematic review that examined intervention studies (i.e., controlled intervention studies, pre/post, no control studies, and program evaluations) related to teacher training in student mental health.  The studies we included in the review consisted of intervention studies focused on improving K–12 teachers’ abilities to identify and manage student mental health concerns conducted either through a control group comparison or a pre/posttest evaluation. Out of the 15 trainings reviewed, 10 resulted in increased knowledge and mental health literacy for the participants and 5 trainings saw an increase in not only knowledge but also skill in intervention and referral for appropriate services.”

Carr, W., Wei, Y., Kutcher, S., & Heffernan, A. (2017). Preparing for the classroom: Mental health knowledge improvement, stigma reduction, and enhanced help-seeking efficacy in Canadian preservice teachers. Candian Journal of School Psychology, 33(4), 314-326. https://doi-org/10.1177/0829573516688596

This is a prospective cohort study (pre, post, and follow-up) designed to observe a group of fifth-year undergraduate students at the faculty of education before and immediately after the professional development session based on a mental health literacy curriculum resource as well as at 3-month follow-up. The Mental Health and High School Curriculum Guide was used in the Guide Professional Development Program (GPDP).  Canadian pre-service educators were guided through six online classroom-ready modules including the stigma of mental illness, understanding mental health and mental illness, information about specific mental illnesses, experiences of mental illness, seeking help and finding support, and the importance of positive mental health. The results of the study show that the GPPDP may be an effective means by which to improve preservice teachers’ mental health literacy significantly and substantially: increasing knowledge, decreasing stigma, and improving personal help-seeking intentions.

How is the practice implemented?

The Next Mark Foundation Teach Training Program provides self-paced training, which includes modules for Anxiety Disorders, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Mood Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Each module will have an explanation of how the student mental health disorder manifests in the classroom and a strategies section. Each module includes training videos, case studies, required quizzes, Educators Check-in and a Teacher Toolbox cheat sheet. After completing each module, users will be eligible to print a completion certificate for 4 Professional Development hours.

Who can implement the practice?

School staff who have completed the online training modules can implement the practice with their students. After completing the training, educators can join in a Q&A session to ask the experts questions about classroom implementation. These sessions are designed to help provide solutions to real-life issues in the classroom.
