What is the supplemental?
The Interconnected Systems Framework (ISF) is a structure and process to integrate Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and School Mental Health (SMH) within school systems. The goal is to blend resources, training, systems, data, and practices to improve outcomes for all children and youth. The ISF emphasizes prevention, early identification, and intervention of the social, emotional, and behavior needs of students. This schoolwide framework includes practices that are delivered by school personnel, including in the classroom.
Who is this supplemental for?
This schoolwide framework includes practices that are delivered by school personnel, including in the classroom (i.e. teachers, administrators, school counselors, and student support staff).
What is the evidence or research that supports the practice?
Weist, M. D., Splett, J. W., Halliday, C. A., Gage, N. A., Seaman, M. A., Perkins, K. A., Perales, K., Miller, E., Collins, D., & DiStefano, C. (2022). A randomized controlled trial on the interconnected systems framework for school mental health and PBIS: Focus on proximal variables and school discipline. Journal of School Psychology, 94, 49–65. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jsp.2022.08.002
In this randomized control trial 24 schools were placed into 3 groups: 8 schools implementing ISF, 8 schools implementing PBIS alone, and 8 schools implementing a typical co-located PBIS and School Mental health systems. Researchers compared the provision of interventions, school discipline, and other variables across all three groups. The results showed that schools implementing the ISF delivered more Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions proportional to their student population than the other two groups. Students attending schools implementing ISF had a statistically significant lower likelihood of receiving office discipline referrals. Additionally, African-American students in schools implementing ISF had a statistically significant less likelihood of receiving an out-of-school suspension.
What are the costs associated with this supplemental?
The costs of implementing ISF are primarily associated with training the school community, time to implement ISF strategies, and other resources like space and materials.
